Different types of blue-green algae grow in these waters, at least one of which, Nodularia spumigena, is toxic, but it is impossible to tell what kind of algae covers the sea from this image alone. Quite possibly, many different kinds of algae make up this bloom.

Some species of Nodularia are associated with benthic environments, but the most common toxin-forming species, Nodularia spumigena, is planktonic.. One of the main bloom-forming species is the heterocystous cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena. N. spumigena exhibits accelerated uptake of phosphate through the release of the extracellular enzyme alkaline phosphatase whose activity also serves as an indicator of the hydrolysis of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP). Nodularia spumigena –solujen hajotessa nodulariini vapautuu meriveteen. Nodularia spumigena, a brackish water planktonic heterocytous cyanobacterium, has been responsible for major blooms along ocean coastlines, estuaries, brackish water basins, and saline lakes of the European, Australian/Oceania, and African continents [10–19]. The research group is a part of Linnaeus University Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems. We recognize the great potential for phytoplankton products to yield renewable energy resources, and the impacts that may have for economic and ecological sustainability. Nodularia spumigena* dominerade.

The intermediate RNA, which presents a template for DGR mutagenesis, has been shown to be highly expressed in lab isolates of Trichodesmium erythraeum IMS101 and in Nodularia spumigena CCY9414 under light and oxidative stress [30, 31].
